Elections seem to bring out the worst in the best of people — mudslinging, character assassinations become a norm, from candidates down to the grassroots. After what transpired around the previous election, what emerged into the current administration, and what a dismal presidential campaign we just dredged through, many Christians are very concerned about the future of our great nation. Before the results are even finalized, which could be days or weeks, and regardless of who wins the White House, there are honest concerns over the prospects of policies that will flow out from this House.
It is easy to see how anxiety can settle in, if we allow this election to control us spiritually. As believers, be reminded, we cannot misalign our focus onto whoever wins an earthy balance of power, because governments will always be subject to God’s almighty power, not the other way around. No government can dethrone God; no politician can undermine God; no policy or proclamation can corrupt God’s Good News, the Gospel. As believers, we can and should be rejoicing because this merciful and just God is eternally on our side.
For the unsaved, the best they have in this life is the closest they will ever be to Heaven. For the saved, our hope remains in Heaven above. Conversely to the unsaved, the worst we have in this life is the closest we will ever be to Hell. In both cases, anxiety can be a result if we lose focus and strive with all our might to be in control of the earthly. Speaking of this election, we may have had a part to play with our vote, but remember that GOD IS STILL IN CONTROL!
Psalm 99 reminds us that the only way to make it through this wretched and wicked world is to spiritually lift up our eyes and see that God still reigneth sovereignly high above all the people, holy and worthy of our praise and worship.
