Read Proverbs 4:25-26 and Psalm 123:1-2
Driving down the road is easy if our eyes are fixed on the road but look to the left or right and it’s funny how the car drifts in the direction we look. Life is the same way. If we fix our eyes on obtaining something, we work hard to obtain it. But many times, years down the road of life, we haven’t obtained what we wanted. Life drifted us in other directions, other careers, other places to live, other friends, and the list goes on and on.
How do we go about making decisions? What guides the first part of our decision-making? Our eyes! We see that special dress and buy it. We see the perfect-looking vehicle at the dealership and figure out how to attain it. If we want something bad enough, most people don’t even think about the debt they incur as long as they get what they see.
We are encouragement to follow the verses above. To keep our eyes “straight before thee,” to lift up our eyes “unto thee,” and to have our eyes “wait upon the Lord.” If we can keep our eyes on the Lord and His plans for our lives, we can save ourselves a lot of heartache. We can find the correct friends, correct houses, correct jobs, and correct spouses. We will have fewer problems. Yes, we will always have problems—that’s life. But it would be great to avoid the problems we put upon ourselves by making wrong decisions based on what we see.
Think about David looking upon Bathsheba (2 Sam, 11:2). He was supposed to be in battle with his warriors, but he tarried in Jerusalem. In the evening, he went to the rooftop and looked upon the woman bathing. His eyes were not where they should be. Think about the Israelites when they wanted a king as they desired to be like the rest of the world (1 Kings 8:6-7). They wanted a king they could “see” sitting on their throne. Today, we are still “seeing” the destruction of God’s people because of this decision thousands of years ago.
So, remember to keep your eyes on the Lord, keep your eyes straight ahead, don’t look left or right, stay in church, read your Bible daily, and pray. Do all things possible to keep your eyes on the Lord.
