“Father, Into Thy Hands I Commend My Spirit”

When Jesus spoke His seventh phrase on the cross ─ Luke 23:46 ─ He was sealing our blessed assurance as He fulfilled the Gospel message. The proof would come in three days by His resurrection.

At this moment on the cross, suspended between Heaven and earth, Jesus is bearing more sins than anyone will commit in their entire lives. It’s estimated 120 billion people have lived on earth to date. If we commit 1 sin per day, very conservative, and live 70 years, we will commit over 25,000 sins in our lifetime. Jesus had all these sins upon Himself, for all mankind ─ past, present, future. Well over 3,000,000,000,000,000 (quadrillion) sins. WOW! Jesus beat out Paul, who said, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” (1 Timothy 1:15). This, knowing Jesus absolutely could not sin ─ “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

At this moment on the cross, hanging as a chief sinner amongst sinners, God was still Jesus’ Father. In His dying breath, Jesus’ words give believers the assurance that no amount of sin “shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39). This does not excuse sinning in our daily lives, but this does exonerate the believer of eternal judgement in Hell.

The blessed assurance of Jesus’ seventh phrase on the cross is eternal security. Why? How? On his cross, Jesus sealed eternal salvation for all who will believe.

And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened [made alive] together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses [3+ quadrillion sins]; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled [disarmed] principalities and powers [Devil and his angels], he made a shew of them openly [disgraced them], triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:13-15)

Is Jesus your personal Savior? If not, He can be today.
