From the National Institute of Health on Aging:
“Physical activity is a cornerstone of healthy aging. Scientific evidence suggests that people who exercise regularly not only live longer, but also may live better — meaning they enjoy more years of life without pain or disability. A study of adults 40 and older found that taking 8,000 steps or more per day, compared to only taking 4,000 steps, was associated with a 51% lower risk of death from all causes. You can increase the number of steps you get each day by doing activities that keep your body moving, such as gardening, walking the dog, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator.”
There was no motorized transportation IN Jesus’ day, they would have walked at least 15 miles per day, which is over 35,000 steps. Today, the average American walks less than 5,000 steps per day. Is it any wonder we are seeing such an increase in unhealthy Americans. Now that we are aging, it is even more important to get the most in our walking each day. It is easier than we think, but it takes awareness and discipline because our bodies keep telling us they have had enough. A good idea is to get a pedometer and start tracking your daily and weekly steps.
If you do not have regular walking routine, please ask your family doctor for advice. But, more important than our physical steps and walking it that we are walking daily with our Lord. “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:6-7). Please be with us at our next Super Sixties Connection and be in our church services if at all possible.
