Read Deuteronomy 29:29
This verse says there are some things of God that we may never know. Understanding “why” helps keep balance in our Christian walk. There are two extreme responses to God’s “secret things.” Some say, “The Bible does not say I cannot do…,” while others say, “The Bible does not say I can do…” These extremes lead to carnal Christianity taking liberty in everything or rigid Christianity taking no liberty in anything, while God wants a biblical balance in our Christian walk.
The word “secret” means “concealed.” God has reasons for concealing some things from us. He conceals what belongs to Him alone, things not for us to seek after in this lifetime (1 Corinthians 13:12). He also conceals what we should search for only when we are spiritually mature. There are also things that are a sin to search into, things that should not be put into our hearts or minds. For example, Jesus said, “It is not for you to know” (Acts 1:6-7), specifically we are not to date-set the coming of our Lord, which is just as much as sin as Adam and Eve searching into what God had forbidden. How often do Christians get caught up searching into things that God clearly said not to?
There are definitely things awaiting our search, as we mature in our Christian walk. Multiple times we are commanded to “seek” (Matthew 6:33; Proverbs 8:17; Jeremiah 29:13). We achieve these searches when we are obedient to God and seek them through the Holy Spirit who is the only One that “will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). Obedience is the key, and the context surrounding Deuteronomy 29:29. God’s point here is that He will not reveal more to us until we are obedient to what He has already revealed. What He has revealed, we are responsible to RECEIVE, to STUDY, and to APPLY. As we do these, God is pleased with our faith and honors our faithfulness by revealing “more and more” of Himself to us (Proverbs 4:18).
The day is coming when our “walk by faith” will be turned to sight. Until that day, our faith is to bow before the mystery of what God has concealed, while standing on the promises and applying what He has revealed. (2 Corinthians 5:7)
