The Little Foxes Spoil The Vine

We saw a red fox the other day and Kim and I wondered what they eat here. Quick research says they are omnivores – they eat rodents, rabbits, and birds, as well as fruits and vegetables, and even insects or scavenging for food scraps when needed. We have all heard they saying, “The fox is in the hen house.” Basically, they will be anywhere and do anything to survive, with little concern to what they spoil.

The fox is like sin in our lives. For most Christians, the issue is not the “big” sins that we are overwhelmingly grateful for God’s mercy in saving us out from. The issue are the “the little foxes, that spoil the vine” (Song of Solomon 2:15). These little critters do all the major damage in our spiritual lives. Yes, we have our radar on high alert to spot “unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters,” but we stop there in Revelation 21:8 and sweep “all liars” under the carpet. We then live a life feeling we are justified, which we are, but never achieve true sanctification, which we must, in our Christian walk. We can speak or excuse the “little white lie” (key word is “little” which is the “little foxes“), we can have a heavy foot driving and feel absolutely no remorse in our sin of violating man’s law (called speeding), and so much more that we excuse while staying focused on those big sins.

What we neglect to realize from Revelation 21:8 is that sin is sin in the eyes of God, big and little sins are treated equally by God. We then wonder why there is no joy in our Christian walk, why things often fall apart in our lives and families, or why we have no sense of purpose in God’s House. The problem is the “little foxes” that we need to tend to daily or they will tend to us and “spoil the vine.”

The solution is found in Proverbs 28:13 and 1 John 1:9.
