From my research, here is my timeline for approximate years of significance for December 25th:
- 164BC ∼ Hanukkah began on 25 Kislev, Jewish November/December
- 46BC ∼ Caesar introduced the Julian Calendar
- 30AD ∼ Jesus celebrated Hanukkah in John 10:22, in winter, not as the Winter Solstice Celebration
- 201AD ∼ An early Christian writing puts December 25th was the Nativity
- 221AD ∼ Several Christian historians set December 25th as the Nativity
- 274AD ∼ Pagan’s Winter Solstice Celebration fell on December 25th
- 313AD ∼ Catholicism began to form as mixture of Christianity and Roman Paganism
- 320AD ∼ The Pope made December 25th their celebration of Christ’s birth
- 325AD ∼ December 25th officially became the Pagan’s Winter Solstice Celebration
- 1582AD ∼ Pope takes the world from the Julian to the Georgian Calendar.
From the Jewish Calendar to the old Roman Calendar to their new Julian Calendar to the Pope’s Georgian Calendar that we use today, December 25th is just another day on the calendar. Unlike Easter that fluctuates to be celebrated closer to the Jewish Calendar, Christmas is a static day of the year. Is December 25th the date of Jesus’ birth? No. Do we have to celebrate Christmas on December 25th? No. Do we have to celebrate Christmas at all? No.
Biblically, though, we can wholeheartedly celebrate Christmas on December 25th without violating anything Pagan or Catholic Paganism, and we can have as much fanfare as we want as long as we don’t violate any other Scripture. Consider the Feast of Purim which was a man-made celebration in Scripture, and the Feast of Dedications which is man-made closely to Purim, and look how much fanfare is found around these and in Nehemiah 8: feasts, pines, gifts, camping, etc.
So, as for me and my house, it is a logical no-brainer that December 25th did not begin with either Paganism or Catholicism.
So, enjoy your Christmas this year, in the Lord. In the process, avoid Christian conspiracies theorists who are out there for one purpose, trying to rob you of the joy of THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
