The Law Of Thy Mother

In Proverbs 1:8 and 6:20, fathers give commandments and instruction, while mother’s lay down the law. This is how God wired us as parents! Mothers are instinctive at teaching, while fathers are instinctive at providing. This does not mean fathers have no influence, but it does mean that mothers have the most influence on a child’s life. There’s a connection between a mother and a child that a father cannot relate to. While we fathers love our children and we would do anything to protect them and supply their needs, it’s in the arms of mother where a child feels most secure. This connection comes from the womb, a bond that can never be broken. Even as science has learned, a child first hears the voice of mother from within the womb.

As unthankful as motherhood may seem at times, mothers persist with uncanny, instinctive steadfastness. Why? Ask any mother and she will tell you motherhood is:

  • The most exhausting … yet most exciting
  • The most thankless … yet most tremendous
  • The most mentally draining … yet most meaningful
  • The most wearing … yet most wonderful
  • The most frustrating … yet the most fantastic job on earth!

God created woman with a relentless love and instinct to be a mother! Yet, most of the time it is not until we have a child of our own that we realize the sacrifices that were made by our mothers. Why? While growing up, “the law of thy mother” seemed unusually cruel, but later in life we learned that all she was doing was helping us into life. It’s this love of our mothers that made us who we are.

We are blessed to have godly mothers with us today, whose law (her words) continue to instruct. I for one am blessed to have a godly wife who instructed our girls with godly counsel from God’s Law (His words). I trust this day will be special for all our mothers as children pamper you for who you are to them! Let these verses encourage both mothers and fathers today:

For the commandment is a lamp [father’s commandment]; and the law is light [mother’s law]; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:” (Proverbs 6:23)

Through thy precepts [God’s Word] I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp [father’s commandments] unto my feet, and a light [mother’s law] unto my path.” (Psalms 119:104-105)
