From the NCLL (National Center for Life and Liberty): “Your will may be changed as often as you wish and should be reviewed when any major life circumstances occur, or, if there are no major changes, at least every five years. If the change you desire to make is relatively simple, an amendment to the document, known as a codicil, can be executed with the help of an attorney. If you decide to write a new will altogether, the new document should specifically revoke (vacate) all prior wills. Keep in mind that revoking a will automatically revokes its codicils, but revoking a codicil does not necessarily revoke a will.”
I am no lawyer, so you should seek legal advice concerning your Last Will and Testament. From my research, and as quoted above, it is important that we have an up-to-date will. We will have an Estate Planning session with a lawyer in an upcoming Super Sixties Connection.
If you are like me, you have not reviewed your Will in years, it is something I didn’t want to remember because it represents that day when I am no longer here. I presumed everyone would figure it out just fine without me. Before researching to write these encouragements on our Last Will & Testament, I considered my Will set in stone until such day arrives. I just turned 59 and am preparing to review my will for the first time in over 25 years.
A will is meant to be flexible and should be reviewed when major important events happen in your life, not limited to this list:
- Your marital status changes
- Your beneficiary, guardian, trustee or representative dies
- Your State or country of residence changes
- Your assets significantly change
- Your mind changes concerning a part of your will
- You have not reviewed your will in years
- Tax laws change
Our Last Will & Testament is the last time our freewill is exercised upon this earth. This thought should encourage us to review our Will to ensure it leaves a lovely lasting impression in the hearts of our loved ones. Jesus’ Last Will & Testament did exactly this, it left a lasting impression in the hearts of billions that He will see face to face one day (Hebrews 9:15-28).
