Olfactory Dysfunction

From the National Institute of Health on Aging:Smells can keep you safe. … You must be able to detect smoke, gas leaks, spoiled food, and vapors from potentially dangerous household chemicals to keep yourself and other members of your household safe. Some injuries and illnesses can cause a long-lasting loss of smell. … Losing your sense of smell may also be a sign of a more serious medical condition … such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease. Be sure to tell your doctor about any change in your sense of smell.

I think it is safe to say, the #1 cause for our loss of smell in the past decade was COVID-19. My case of this flu was severe; I lost all sense of smell and taste for a year. I witnessed the reality of our taste and smell being connected to each other. Certain delightful foods lost their appeal, even my morning cup’a coffee tasted like water. Life became very dull and bland. The medical terminology for this is classified as Olfactory Dysfunction.

Just as our taste and smell work together to bring delight, God has connected several spiritual aspects of our life to accomplish the same. My question is, how dull and bland is your Christian life? Have you lost the delight you once had in God’s Word? Has church become mundane? Jesus dealt with two important senses in Matthew 5, where in Luke 14:34-35 He said if we have lost these then we are not “fit for the land” but for the “dunghill.” Jesus’ words are a sad spiritual reality of our carnal flesh; we call it being backslidden. The sad part of when we lose our spiritual senses is that a lost word is watching and responding likely by rejecting Jesus Christ.

In Matthew 5:13 we are to be “the salt of the earth” so the world can taste Jesus. We must allow our lives to leave men wanting what we have in Christ (1 Peter 3:15).

In Matthew 5:14 we are to be “the light of the world” so the world can find Jesus. We must allow the direction in lives make a clear biblical path for them to follow, that they can find “your Father which is in heaven” (5:16).
